64th Birthday Party
Tuesday Evening April 19, 2005

By Yodit Ethiopia    Photographer Wilbur Smith
The San Mateo Toastmasters took a break from the usual Tuesday Evening Meeting and celebrated 64 years of continuous meetings. The Faithful gathered in Foster City at the Recreation Room of Past President Sharon Giordano. It was a Pot Luck Affair with all kinds of Goodies; Chinese Food, Japanese Food, Middle-Eastern Goodies, South of the Border Grilled Chicken and even some good ole American Baked Chicken.

President Calona Paiko led the festivities, which was mostly eating and lively talk or was it lively talk and eating?

We all sang ‘Happy Birthday to TM 191.’ Jan Half was our designated cake cutter.

We bid Farewell to Past President Mark Willey who is soon to return to Mother England. Area Governor Tony ‘The Toastmaster’ Deleon announced the upcoming Division D Contest, which was held on Saturday, April 23 in San Mateo.
Was the Party a success? Since at 9pm there was still a large delegation of Members and Guests talking a mile a minute we will have to say that all indications are the Party was a huge success.

Thanks to Toastmaster and President Calona Paiko who planned the Event, Sergenat-aty-Arms Chaitanya Vasili, Andy Coltart, Tony Deleon and Wilbur Smith and others who did the heavy lifting in setting up and cleaning up the event room and thanks to all of the members who brought the Goodies, kept the Party hopping with all the lively Chatter which made our 64th Birthday Party an event to warmly remember.

Double Decades – Double Fun
By Carmen Schwagerl
Area B1’s Adlibmasters celebrated its 20th Anniversary on November 2, 2004 by throwing a party at the Chevys Fresh Mex Grill in San Jose. If the present is any indication of the future, then Adlibmasters will be a great spawning ground for good communicators. Ten-year member and alum, Steve McLaughlin captured many moments that evening in his photos at: http://www.geocities.com/adlibmaster/20thAnn/.

The evening had a celebratory agenda of speeches, evaluations, table topics and an open mic. Honorable guests Shirley Farrell-Cowles and Rose Renwick awarded the club its much-earned recognition for serving the South Bay professional community for two decades. Seven-year member and VP Membership, Lorraine Myers, provided a “highly presidential-style” inspiring address to assure another 20 years of Adlibmasters. Representing District Four and giving a toast at this event was Area C-5 Governor Carmen Schwagerl, ATMB/CL.

Twenty five people in the audience learned of the recent greatest moments in the club’s history, which have been its turn-around over the last four years. Brian Delaire, five-year member, spoke to encourage his fellow members. Christopher Stile, past Division B Governor, told the story of how they had started with their own assessment, “Moments of Truth”, and began a long-term commitment to growth and achieved the up-and-coming club of today.
Uplifting, timely speeches were heard all evening. Tom Carroll, VP Education, toasted to the personal contributions of his fellow toastmasters and their success to turn the club’s “warm ember” into a “bright, tall flame.” Club President Srinivas Sagar spoke to motivate us to vote. Luckily, most of us had voted already and nodded in agreement.
Table Topics took a unique turn when Ryan Cheng let fortune cookies select the topics. It was delightful to hear how fitting each cookie’s message was for each speaker. Shirley Farrell-Cowles’ cookie-fortune was sweet enough to win at Table Topics, but all of the speakers used the lectern opportunity well. Ann Webb responded to her cookie’s mention of current changes and promoted downtown San Jose as a newly changed neighborhood. Ofelia’s cookie had a holiday theme, “Good things come in small packages” which she swiftly segued into how small children turn into such good things. Srini Namineni nimbly spoke to the cookie’s claim, “a friend in need is a friend indeed.”

The event was delightful, educational, and fun. Chevys was a gracious host facility. Congratulations to the Adlibmasters club on another milestone!
